Showing or hiding desktop icons is fairly easy in Windows 10. You just have to right-click on the desktop, click View option, and then click Show desktop icons option to show/hide desktop icons. While there is no keyboard shortcut exist to show or hide desktop icons by default, yo can create a keyboard shortcut to show/hide desktop icons.
At times, you might not be able to see icons and other files on the desktop even when the desktop view is configured to show icons.
If you cannot see desktop icons in Windows 10, you can try out the solutions given below.
Solution 1 of 5
Check desktop icon settings
Have you used the default way to show desktop icons? Here is how to show desktop icons.
Step 1:Right-click on the desktop. Click View and then click Show desktop icons option.
If you have already done this, please skip to the next solution.
Solution 2 of 5
Auto arrange icons
If desktop icons stopped appearing after disconnecting from an external monitor, here is what you need to do to get them back.
Step 1:Right-click on the desktop, click View and then click Auto arrange desktop icons option.
This option does nothing but puts back icons that were previously outside the viewing area of the screen.

Turn off the tablet mode
When your Windows 10 device is in tablet mode, you cannot see or access desktop icons/files. Here is how to turn off the tablet mode:
Step 1:Open Settings (Windows logo + I). Click System category.
Step 2: Click Tablet mode. In When I sign in drop down box, select Use desktop mode option.
Step 3: Close running applications and then sign out. Sign in again to see desktop icons. If you cannot see them, right-click on the desktop, click View, and then click Show desktop icons option.

Restore Windows 10 to a previous date
If desktop icons were appearing until a few days back, you could try restoring Windows 10 to an earlier date to fix the issue. Refer to our how to restore Windows 10 an earlier date guide for step-by-step directions.
Solution 5 of 5
Create a new user account
If you cannot live without desktop icons, you can create a new user account and move all your data from your current user account to that account.
Refer to our to how to create a new local user account in Windows 10 guide for instructions.

- How to fix broken taskbar icons in Windows 7 12 answers
I installed Visual Studio 2012 yesterday and during the install my path somehow got screwed up1. Since then, the icons for applications that are part of Windows are the default 'unknown' icon, but other icons are fine. The applications that the shortcuts link to launch fine when the icons are clicked on.

I have fixed my path, but the icons still show incorrectly.
Any ideas on how to flush what appears to be a set of cached icons?
1Something took a path of A;B;C;D; and turned it into A;B;C;D;A;B;C;D;E;F; - duplicating a large part of it to that point that no more characters were available to type in the edit box in system properties. This had the side-effect of Windows reporting that it couldn't find %windir%.

I have solved the icon issue by:
- Starting the Task Manager
- Ending the explorer.exe process (Right click on explorer.exe -> End process)
- Opening a command line window (File -> New Task (Run..) -> Type cmd.exe)
- In the cmd window type
- Now you need to delete the iconcache.db file
- Exit the cmd window by typing
- Starting the explorer again (File -> New Task (Run..) -> Type explorer.exe)
Now you should be able to see the restored icons.

I eventually solved this by following the advice given here, although not the advice in the article but the advice in one of the comments:
change momentarily the screen color depth to 16 bits, for example, and, when Windows asks you whether you want to keep the changes or not, click 'No' to restore the original settings.
The advice in the main body of the article (about changing the view hidden folders and files setting) didn't work.

I think that loosing the icons is only one of the symptoms of a broader problem, which is that the PATH variable gets messed up. See the following discussion on the VisualStudio forum. The problem seems to be caused by an excesively long

I right-clicked on the item with the missing icon and chose properties. In the properties dialog box I clicked to change the icon. I changed the icon (for example, from the main program icon to the document icon for that program) and pressed OK (I had to have administrator rights to confirm). I then repeated the process to change the icon back, at which point the icon was now visible.
